If you are over 65 and own real properties, you may be able to save your estate a substantial amount of money in estate administration taxes (usually called probate fees) by transferring the property to an alter ego or joint partner trust. Trusts may also be appropriate if you have children with disabilities who are not able to manage their own affairs or other special circumstances. Trusts are complicated and careful consideration needs to be given to whether they are appropriate and how they should be structured. If you are considering establishing a trust you will need legal advice. I have experience in preparing trust documentation and can help you decide if a trust would be appropriate for your circumstances.
